So I never got around to adding those reviews like I planned, even though my Super Challenge progress has been going pretty well. I intend to get down to it in the next couple of weeks (I’ve been having blog overhauls everywhere), but I’m adding some new notes here:
- If I’ve watched a dubbed version of something (i.e. Harry Potter), or a translated version of a book, then my review will be in the target language, not English. For things like Harry Potter I end up not really giving a review because I don’t see the point; if I write it in German, then that’s some more practice.
- I don’t think I’m going to get to 100 books for Mandarin – I don’t think I’m even going to get close, being as I’ve read no books so far and I’m not sure I’d even have time to read 100 English books in 11 months. I’m not scrapping that part of the challenge (because I can’t), but I’m going to focus more on writing and watching films than I am on reading.
- I’m not going to add any kind of Russian challenge. Russian is one of my TAC languages this year and I’m very excited about it, but I’m not going to allow myself to add another language. Maybe I’ll do it if this is running again next year. Maybe.
- I’m still torn about whether to up my German challenge. That is TBD, but I need to decide in the next couple of months really.
That’s pretty much it. I’ve got five review posts to write and hopefully I’ll keep on top of updating this time! Here’s to a new year and finishing some kind of challenge!
Wow, long time no post, huh?
A lot’s happened since… July, so I’ll try and summarise it as concisely as I can.
Firstly, I’ve moved to Germany. It’s not all that important from a Super Challenge point of view (I didn’t pick conversation for either of my languages), but it serves as some of an excuse as to why I haven’t posted in a while; I’ve been SUPER busy.
In the meantime, I’ve watched some German films (The Dark Knight Rises at a cinema here, and Die Schöne und das Biest just because I love Disney ;)) and a Mandarin one (花木兰, the 2009 live-action version of Mulan), but I’ve also done something else…
I’ve added a new challenge. Since I came here, I’ve started taking a Korean class and since I liked Korean dramas anyway, I’ve added the half challenge (films only) for Korean :D. It’s going well, I’ve been watching ‘Rooftop Prince’ (옥탑방 왕세자) and I looooove it.
I’m going to review what I’ve watched later (because it’s nearly 1 a.m. here now), but I am most definitely back and throwing myself head-first into this challenge.
I hope you’re all still with me! 😀
Number of episodes: 35 (33 counted)
Time watched: 24 hours 45 mins (16.5 “films”)

This month isn’t off to too bad a start. I’ve nearly finished watching 《宫-鎖心玉〉(with three episodes left, I’m hoping to finish it tonight/in the wee hours of the morning), so I get to post a review of that soon, yay! Considering this is the second time I’ve watched this series, it’s pretty clear I love it (though there are some things I find odd…).
I’ve also finally given in and ordered one of the Chinese Breeze readers. It’s called ‘我可以请你跳舞吗？’ (‘Can I dance with you?’), and it’s only at the 300 word level, but I didn’t want to buy yet another thing I can’t read. I’m just waiting for Amazon to dispatch it (their estimated dispatch date is TODAY but it hasn’t set off yet… -_-), and then I’ll finally have something I should be able to read. I’ll finish ‘吹牛大战’ at some point as well, I’m sure. Eventually ;).
I have got to start watching some proper German films as well; I’ve got Soul Kitchen and Das Leben der Anderen (amongst many, many others) – so there’s no excuse but I’m being a bit lazy. I’ve watched two episodes of Avatar – Der Herr der Elemente as well, but I haven’t counted them because I need to stop watching dubs and start watching originals.
In other news, I’m more than halfway through Harry Potter und der Gefangene von Askaban, but I need to speed up if I’m going to finish the series before I go away. (4th September, eek!)
Mandarin writing is progressing at a slow but alright pace. I wrote a piece about my Chinese name (I wanted a new one; my old one is my transliterated English name and way too long and complicated for me) and got a record number of corrections/comments… and a whole heap of suggestions for a new name! I think I’m going to go with 月如, but that could change :).
Hm, that’s about it. Hopefully I’ll get on with that film watching and have some reviews ready in the next few days… It’s going to get incredibly dull around here if all I’m doing is updating all the time.
Second piece of writing! Wooh! I’m aware that the translations sound a little… off, but it’s really more about the Mandarin, isn’t it? 😉 It’s because I keep translating them afterwards and I’m being too literal, so I will try to improve that if it’s weird.
